Do Digital Invitations Expire? What to Check Before You Buy

Digital invitations do not share one expiration rule. The guest page, RSVP form, paid custom domain, and host’s messaging tools can have different end dates. Before choosing a service, confirm how long each stays available, what happens after the event, and whether hiding, canceling, or deleting the invitation changes access. An RSVP deadline alone does not necessarily remove the invitation.

What does “expires” mean for your invitation?

A guest may want to check an address on the wedding morning, find a photo link afterward, or save the invitation as a keepsake. A host may need to contact everyone about a lost item several weeks later. Those needs depend on different features, so “your event stays online” is not a complete answer.

Use the following distinction when comparing services. It applies whether you are planning a wedding, a birthday, or another celebration; the provider’s actual terms matter more than the event label.

Separate timeline What it controls Question to ask
Guest-page availability Whether guests can open the hosted details Does the page remain available after the event or plan ends?
RSVP cutoff Whether a guest can submit or change a response What remains visible when responses close?
Custom-domain term Whether a purchased web address still leads to the site What address works if the domain expires?
Host-tool availability Messaging, adding guests, and other management features Do any tools stop working after the event?
Removal and recovery What happens when the host hides, cancels, or deletes content What do guests see, and can the action be undone?

Do not infer an end date from a package name such as “premium” or “one event.” Likewise, a yearly payment does not by itself tell you whether the page disappears when payment stops. Ask the provider to connect its billing terms to the particular feature you need.

Will guests still be able to open the event page?

Some services explicitly retain wedding websites after the celebration. Zola’s current help guidance says its account, website, and registry do not expire and remain available after the wedding while the pages are visible in account settings. That is a statement about Zola’s current service, not a promise that every invitation platform keeps every event indefinitely.

For another provider, ask when its availability period begins: purchase, first publication, first send, or the event date. Also ask what happens if the event is postponed. A page that covers a short party-planning window may not necessarily cover a long engagement or a substantially rescheduled celebration.

Distinguish the guest’s view from your own dashboard. You may still be able to sign in without the old guest link working, or a guest page may remain visible while particular host tools are no longer available. Have support explain both views if the documentation is unclear.

Does an expired custom domain delete the wedding website?

Not necessarily. A custom domain is the personalized web address, while the website is the content hosted behind it. The Knot explains that an expired custom domain causes the wedding website to revert to its original free URL, with the site and its information intact. It directs couples to the dashboard’s privacy settings to find the domain expiration date.

Joy’s custom-domain FAQ similarly says its free withjoy.com address remains active when a custom domain is added. If the domain expires, the site returns to the free address without losing its content. These examples show why you should check the address and the page separately, rather than assuming one renewal controls everything.

The practical issue is the exact address you gave guests. If a printed card points to the paid domain, the continued existence of a free URL does not prove that the printed address still works. Record both addresses, the domain’s renewal date, and who manages it before you approve your invitation wording.

Turning off renewal can also differ from disconnecting a domain immediately. Joy’s renewal instructions say the connected domain stays active until its expiration date after auto-renewal is turned off. Confirm the equivalent behavior with your own provider before changing anything guests rely on.

Can the page stay open after RSVPs or messaging close?

Yes, a response control and an event page can have different lifetimes. Joy’s RSVP-deadline guidance says the RSVP button disappears after the deadline and can be replaced with a configured message. Closing responses is therefore not the same action as removing the whole website.

Host features can have separate post-event limits, too. Partiful currently allows Text Blasts for up to 60 days after an event. That is a messaging cutoff; it does not establish that the page expires on day 60. Its past-event guest guidance also says guests cannot be invited after the event date and recommends inviting people who need access beforehand.

For example: you want to request photographs six weeks after a reception and send a final message about lost items later. Check those specific dates against the service’s documented messaging window. If a tool will be unavailable, plan another appropriate communication channel rather than assuming the invitation dashboard will handle it.

For choosing how responses close, our capacity, deadline, and waitlist guide covers the attendance decision. Here, the important question is what still works after that decision has been made.

Are canceling, hiding, and deleting equivalent?

No. Treat each label as a separate action until the provider explains its effects. In Apple Invites, canceling notifies guests, stops further RSVPs, and lets the host continue viewing the event, guest list, shared album, and playlist; cancellation can be reversed. Deleting prevents guests from viewing event details and cannot be recovered. The shared album and playlist remain in Photos and Music.

Paperless Post’s deletion guidance says deleted Cards and Flyers become inaccessible to recipients, who see a 404 page. This describes access through the invitation link. It does not establish that every copy, screenshot, or separately stored image has been erased.

Before removing an event, ask four questions: does the action notify guests, what will the existing link show, can you reverse it, and what related content remains elsewhere? If plans are canceled, communicate that clearly before relying on a missing page to explain the situation. A broken link alone does not tell a guest why the event is unavailable.

A pre-purchase availability checklist

Save the answers with the provider, plan name, and date checked. A brief written answer is easier to revisit than an assumption based on a sales headline.

  1. Set your required window. Include planning, the event, and any realistic post-event follow-up.
  2. Confirm both access paths. Ask about the guest link and your host dashboard separately.
  3. Check postponement. Find out whether changing the event date changes expiration or incurs an extension requirement.
  4. Record domain dates. Know the renewal date, the fallback address, and which URL appears on printed stationery.
  5. List essential tools. Check late messaging, adding guests, and response changes rather than assuming an open page includes them.
  6. Understand removal. Read the distinction between hiding, archiving, canceling, and deleting in that service.
  7. Plan a keepsake. Ask what invitation content you can legitimately save before closing the account. Guest-list export is a separate task; use our export-testing guide if you need it.

Quick questions before printing a website address

Does the RSVP deadline mean the invitation expires?

Not automatically. It may close only the response form. Check what guests can still read and how they should contact you after the cutoff.

Can I keep a physical invitation even if the website closes?

Yes, the physical stationery is separate from the hosted page. LunaInvites’ Burgundy Envelope Clear Acrylic Wedding Invitations with Gold Frame include a clear acrylic card and burgundy envelope. The digital design proof is for approving that physical order, not an event-hosting subscription or a digital invitation file for sale.

When should the website address be settled?

Before approving printed wording. Test the exact address and confirm it will remain usable through your required window. Under the current shipping policy, US shipping is free and estimated total delivery is approximately 7–8 days after final proof approval, including two days of production. Delivery is estimated, not guaranteed.
